| Company Brief |
In Bali Craft, we provide the geringsing textiles. The spectaculer Geringsing Textiles are made from Tenganan village, the origin Balinese tribe in Bali, Indonesia. The textiles are produced by the double-ikat method, means double knot method. The method and process is known only to a handful weavers around the world.
The process of dyeing a double-ikat is many times more sophisticated than for the single-ikats found elsewhere in Indonesia. Where most weavers tie-and-dye only the warp or the weft, the Tengananese dye both. The arrangement of the warp on the loom, around the breast and warp beams, replicates its orientation on the warping frame and recreates the intended pattern.
Geringsing are handmade from start to finish in a process that can take years.. the base material is from cotton which initially dyed yellow. Two sets of knots are used to produce the three-color design they are Indigo, blue, and red. All knots resist the initial indigo dye and only unknotted areas become blue. After one set of knots has been opened the threads are re-dyed red: this dyes the newly exposed yellow sections an earthy red, and over-dyes the indigo with red to produce a blue-black. Opening the second set of knots reveals sections of thread that have received neither dye and will be yellow in the woven textiles.
The initial eggshell-yellow is from pecan nut oil. Indigo blue is an aqueous solution of the young leaves of taum (local name for indigofera tinctorial plant. The barks of the roots of suli (local name for morinda citrifolia tree are used to form a red dye which is also aqueous. Time consuming though the tying and dyeing processes are, it is the slow combining of oil- and water-based dyes that takes the most time. Dye lots are stored for many years while waiting for these colours to mature.
Meanwhile, another craft we provide are paintings, and carved object. Those are hand made by local Bali artist from Ubud. Ubud well known as the heart of Bali. Ubud people were born to be artist.
